Anyone who follows our reports knows that we rarely plan routes. But when it comes to off-roading, it makes sense to learn from other people's mistakes. So before we set off, we bought the Sardinia Trackbook from experience Verlag. As soon as we leafed through it, it was clear that we wanted to see track 13, the Ponte Romano. Without this off-road guide, we would certainly not have found this place, beautiful bridge and ford. So many thanks to Melina Lindenblatt and Matthias Göttenauer from the experience Offroad Travel Team. Is that advertising now? At least not a paid one.

TRACK 13: This bridge has many names for being on an "Unnamed Road". But we are mainly here because of the ford next to it. For Icelandic drivers or commuters who regularly cross the Rufford Ford, i.e. the ford in England, this tour may seem unspectacular. But we were very excited about this location and were not disappointed.

According to Trackbook Sardinia, the bridge is closed at times. "In this case, you are forced to take the ford" - In our case, the bridge was not only open, it was even rush hour at times. The exciting thing is that although the bridge is short, it is all the steeper for it. What's more, there are large stones to negotiate on both sides. This is not easy, as the bridge is also very narrow. What can I say, it's fun to ride it. At least with ground clearance. Now there is still a ford. So you don't have to drive the bridge. But most off-road vehicles chose the bridge today. On closer inspection, you can see that only tractors choose the ford.

What does that tell us? Nothing to me 😉 So the tide. I'm sure there will now be voices saying that we drove this ford when the water level was higher. I'm happy to believe that, I even know a corresponding video. We could have done with a few centimetres more too. But videos of the Rufford ford show how few vehicles like a water crossing.

But our SpaceCamper has been prepared by Terranger for exactly this purpose. A so-called Island Kit provides 90 cm of wading clearance. Details of the conversion can be found here. So it could be much lower. But you take what you can get. For us, it was the first experience with a ford of this kind. Not a flooded road, but a stony riverbed. The water pushes from the side. And my previous ascent showed that it is better to drive than walk. The ground is extremely uneven. The stones are coarse.

So it was a good place to try things out. Which we did extensively. So it didn't just remain a crossing. We had a lot of fun, which might be a bit of an exaggeration. I had fun as I used to jump into every puddle when I was little. We were also able to see and hear how one or two people suffered minor injuries to their vehicles when crossing the bridge. So don't forget to plan a little time for this location.

How to find it? Like us, buy the Trackbook Sardinia. We also have the Corsica trackbook on board. But thanks to Corona, we have to postpone this tour. We still want to go to Iceland and Germany is also quite beautiful...
