Day No. 11 - Krk Island

Day No. 11 - Krk Island

When we arrive in the evening with the ferry in Valbiska on the island of Krk, it is important to quickly find a place for the night. We have been warned against wild camping on the islands. So we quickly beat us to the camping Glavotok, in the same named place Glavotok on the...

Day No. 7 - Krka Waterfalls

Day No. 6 - Zadar - The sounds of the sea

Day No. 6 - Zadar - The sounds of the sea

Although I have not been in the old town of Zadar for about 45 years, I still have the pictures in my mind with stalls of a bazaar, such as one finds today only in the Orient. Everywhere carpets and bags made of some kind of carpet were hawked. Garlic...

Day No. 5 - Punta Skala

Day No. 5 - Punta Skala

We enjoy the day at the sea. Our SUP is unpacked and launched. The sea is so calm that our board, which is actually not intended for the sea, nevertheless proves itself. - But in the afternoon something special is planned. We want to go with the...

Day No. 4 - On the way to Petrčane

Day No. 4 - On the way to Petrčane

Today we want to go near Zadar, more precisely to Petrčane. This is about 10 kilometers north of Zadar. I remember the place as a small, then still Yugoslav fishing village. As a little boy I ate my first suckling pig here....

Day No. 2 and 3 - The Balkan Route

Day No. 1 - Back to the future

Day No. 1 - Back to the future

Foreword: The nice thing about the digital age is that you can rewind sometimes. Just like when I was lying on my stomach in front of my tape recorder and, stop, rewind. - That already existed in the analog age. So rewind again, to the first day...

Croatia - The start of a long journey

Anyone can go on vacation in Croatia. But Torgit and I wanted more. Above all, more sea. The coast is as anchored in our hearts as the Cologne Cathedral - and that's exactly why we were so attracted to Croatia. Encouraged by a recommendation of a colleague, we wanted to make our own picture of the regions and beaches of Croatia and decided to start our trip here. But of course not like normal tourists - with our VW California "Hector" we started our journey from Cologne. Of course we spent the night in our van - and since we enjoy traveling and camping so much, we would like to share this with you of course. We report about our experiences on campsites, experiences with the service and what you do when you can't find a place. By the way - "Hector" is now sorely missed, because he is the predecessor of Space Camper "Butch" - a SpaceCamper VW T6.1, which accompanies us since June 2020 and was converted by the company Terranger. Since we also drive many routes offroad and our journey often leads over various steep climbs and descents, inclined positions, rutted paths and especially through immense amounts of dirt, an upgrade in this regard was also needed. After all, we want our Butch to stay with us for a long time!

You can also find more details about the two vans in the Vanlife category. We have also listed there exact information about which conversions we have made.

The artistic city of Zadar

Our further journey takes us to Zadar and its beautiful old town. One of the sights of Zadar that impressed us here is the sea organ by architect Nikola Bašić. In addition, we could also admire an exhibition of Salvador Dalí. And even if we didn't visit Dubrovnik, the picturesque sunset in Zadar made up for it.

Bypass tourism at Krka waterfalls

The Croatian island of Krk is not only known for the small airport in the national park, but also for the gorgeous Krka waterfalls. We decide to explore the waterfalls on our own and thus avoid the tourists. Those who know the old Winnetou movies will know why we feel a corresponding enthusiasm for the Krka waterfalls. By the way, "The Treasure in Silver Lake" was filmed at the Plitvice Lakes. Scenes for the Winnetou movies "Old Shatterhand", "Among Vultures", "The Oil Prince" and "Winnetou and Shatterhand in the Valley of the Dead" were shot at the Krka Waterfalls. If that is not reason enough to travel there once!

The islands of Pag and Rab

Our further journey leads us to the island of Pag, where we found a bit of peace from all the hustle and bustle. The charming island also greeted us with the most beautiful weather, so camping on Pag also really brought relaxation. Whereby, who knows us, knows that actually no weather can cloud us.

The island of Rab is located north of Pag and is, despite the short distance, quite different. Densely populated, a lot of nature and a beautiful old town make Rab and we decide to rest there. We can really recommend it there. Due to the history of Rab, this town is also full of sights to admire.

Camping on Krk

At the end of our stay in Croatia we go to the island of Krk again. Here we explore the town of Vrbnik and also Krk itself once again. There we try local delicacies, but initially have problems finding a campsite on Krk - at least, late in the evening. But that does not take away our joy. One thing that you can always enjoy in Croatia, besides great walks in nice weather along the coast, are the breathtaking sunsets.

But we also know that texts alone cannot describe the whole beauty of Croatia, so of course you will also find pictures of our experiences in our blog posts.
