Commissioner Dupin
Zum einen haben wir uns zwei weitere Ausgaben der Buchreihe, Kommissar Dupin, von Jean-Luc Bannalec zugelegt. Diese Bretagnekrimis sind einfach zu schön. Eine Hommage an die Bretagne und vor allem an die Bretonen. – Nun habe ich auch ihn gelesen. Kommissar Dupins achter Fall, Bretonisches Vermächtnis, welcher direkt vor der Restauranttür von Dupins Lieblingsrestaurant, „dem Admiral“ in Concarneau, spielen soll. Nach No. Sieben hatte ich kurz gedacht was soll da noch kommen. Doch es blieb bis zur letzten Seite spannend.

Volume Five- Breton Tide takes our Inspector Dupin into the world of fishermen, the purest eco-crime novel. - Volume four, Breton Pride is set in the environment of the oyster farmers. Although Dupin himself doesn't eat oysters, he describes the shellfish perfectly. Volume three, Breton Gold is set in the world of salt marshes on the Guérande Peninsula. The world-famous fleur de sel is in the air. But the world of the salt workers doesn't seem quite so wholesome. Volume two, Breton Surf is set on the Glénan Islands. The descriptions of the islands alone, with their supposedly white sand, crystal clear waters as a sort of Caribbean paradise, should be reason enough to take another look. Because by the time I read this novel, we had already left Brittany. Volume one Breton Circumstances is set in the artists' village of Pont Aven - These crime novels make you want to go to Brittany so much that it should be required reading for anyone who intends to visit. (Note from Torgit: Unfortunately, we had such bad weather in Brittany that we quickly moved on. Visiting the islands makes no sense in the rain. But we definitely have to go there again. With better weather).
What I like so much about these mystery novels is the way Inspector Dupin describes restaurants, eateries, and locales. Here is a small reading sample, from his fifth case, Breton Tide:
„Am Meer war der Himmel immer weit, gigantisch weit, ja, aber hier auf der Insel wirkte er noch weiter, noch höher, er bläht sich, reckte, streckte, dehnte sich überall hin, selbst der gewaltige Atlantik geriet unter ihm bloß zu einem schmalen blitzenden Streifen. Wie bei einem starken Weitwinkelobjektiv, durch das man im Liegen blickte, genau dieser Effekt war es, dachte Dupin. Und dieser Eindruck, das stand fest, gehörte zu denen, die der Insel ihre besondere Atmosphäre verliehen. Es war ein Gefühl unendlicher Weite, das einen zugleich ganz klein werden ließ – und frei. Seltsam frei. Gefährlich frei vielleicht.“ – Horny or?

An anarchist banker
As you know, our tour continued through Portugal. From my point of view, this also includes reading a book by Fernando Pessoa. After all, he is one of the most important lyricists in Portugal.
For me, this was reason enough to search our bookshelf in Cologne for a very specific book. Because there's a book by Pessoa there that I'm particularly taken with. When two friends, independently of each other, recommend a book to you, you should read it. For me it was "An Anarchist Banker". Both my friend of many years Uwe from Berlin, and my old Hortenführer with the Wandervögeln Tabbu, or in real life Holger, gave me this book almost at the same time. Could be because both are old revolutionaries at heart.
The book describes, in a kind of monologue, a conversation between a businessman and banker, which he has one evening with a guest in his house. The same guest questions that he had heard that his host had been an anarchist in the past. Contrary to all expectations, the latter not only openly admits that this is the case, but also explains that he is still a convinced anarchist today. His guest is, of course, appropriately puzzled as to how the life of a banker can be reconciled with that of an anarchist. The banker explains why he was almost forced to become rich in order to continue to represent his ideals. His chain of reasoning seems so real that in the end one thinks that the true anarchist must become a banker, the true banker is a consistent anarchist.
I find this book so exciting, on the one hand, because revolutionary thinking and money seem to be compatible. On the other hand, because it was written under the impressions and political turmoil of the young Portuguese Republic. The book was published in 1922. As recently as October 1921, troops of the republican National Guard GNR had attempted an overthrow of the government.
So we can be glad that today's GNR is only a danger for us, in terms of a parking ticket for wild camping.
Fish
Unterwegs habe ich ein wertvolles Buch wiederentdeckt. – „Noch mehr Fish“. Dies ist der zweite Band einer dreiteiligen Buch Serie. Den ersten Band, bekam ich vor vielen Jahren, von meiner guten Freundin Susanne, an die Hand gegeben. Band Nummer eins „Fish, ein ungewöhnliches Motivations Buch“, ist genau das, was der Titel beschreibt. Motivation wird auf unglaubliche Art und Weise transportiert.
Hierbei wird die Philosophie, des Pike Place Fish Market gespiegelt. Simple Spielregeln für glückliche Menschen am Arbeitsplatz oder sollte ich sagen Spielplatz? John Christensen, der Autor schuf diese Philosophie, um eine „Teamkultur“ zu erschaffen. Der Pike Place Fischmarkt in Seattle ist inzwischen weltbekannt. Einfache Fisch-Verkäufer wurden zu Stars.
Dabei sind die „Regeln“ so einfach und jeder, wirklich jeder kann sie bei seiner täglichen Arbeit anwenden. Was in Seattle beim Fischverkauf wie eine Show wirkt, ist Teil des Ganzen. Dort fliegen Fische durch die Luft, es werden Späße gemacht, Kunden werden einbezogen. Aus einer Routinearbeit und knochenhartem Job wird Spiel und Spaß. – Dabei gilt es lediglich die folgenden vier Grundsätze zu beherzigen:
1. choose your setting
Wir alle haben die freie Wahl, wir können entscheiden, nicht immer ob, jedoch mit welcher Einstellung wir unsere Arbeit machen. Tobias Beck würde sagen, wie Bewohner, sprich jammernd und klagend oder man macht das Beste daraus. Selbst wenn wir die Umstände nicht ändern können, haben wir immer noch die Freiheit die Einstellung zu ändern. – „Love it, leave it or change it.“ und gerade hier draußen zeigt sich mal wie einfach „Change it“ sein kann.
2. fun and games!
A workplace can also be a playground. We should just awaken our inner child again. The little man who played for hours, who never needed to be motivated. Give yourself permission to have fun and play even at work. You only have a little room to create, so start small. Bring plants, hang pictures, start playing. That's ridiculous? - That's fine!
3. bring joy to others
If you give joy to others, you yourself will feel joy as the giver. Rich is not he who has much, but he who gives much.
Make your colleagues, employees, managers and customers happy. Be on the lookout for such opportunities. In the long run, you will improve the work atmosphere enormously and have positive feelings yourself throughout the day.
4. be present!
Live in the here and now, live in presence, be present. - Be fully present, no matter whether you are on the phone, reading or doing whatever. Not doing everything at the same time is pure self-protection, because it prevents burn-out.

Band drei „Für immer FISH“ zeigt abschließend wie man die Fish-Philosophie verankert und Motivation frisch hält, was ja bei Fish wichtig ist.

Realization of the day: To death I have only one realization, to live again and again as if it were the last day. - This is challenge enough!
