Day No. 6 - Zadar - The sounds of the sea

Although I haven't been to the old town of Zadar for around 45 years, I still have images of bazaar stalls in my head, the likes of which can only be found in the Orient today. Carpets and bags made from a kind of carpet were on sale everywhere. Garlic and onions in abundance. Fruit and vegetables were displayed in large baskets. Old women sold šljivovica, olives, olive oil and cheese. 

We drift through the alleyways of Zadar's old town. 

Although Zadar cannot deny its Venetian and Roman past, much has changed. - Where the ferries to Italy used to dock, steps now invite you to linger. We were particularly impressed by the so-called Sea Organ (Morske orgulje) by architect Nikola Bašić. The movement of the waves creates music by forcing air into organ pipes. This creates different tones. Absolutely worth listening to! After our long walk through Zadar's old town, we enjoy the peace and quiet on the steps.

Bei unserem Spaziergang sehen wir plötzlich Hinweise einer Ausstellung. Angeblich werden Werke des spanischen Surrealisten Salvador Dali in Zadar gezeigt. – Das lassen wir uns natürlich nicht entgehen. Es werden über 200 Bilder, Wandteppiche, Skulpturen und Reliefs des Künstlers ausgestellt. – Dachte ich früher an Dali, kamen mir vor allem die weichen Uhren des Künstlers in den Sinn. Das ist nicht meines, habe ich gedacht. Dann stand ich vor seinem Werk „El concilio ecuménico“ im Dali Museum in Saint Petersburg und war nur noch begeistert. Heute ist sein Werk „La gare de Perpignan“ („Der Bahnhof von Perpignan“) ein absoluter Liebling von mir. Netterweise hängt es im Kölner Museum Ludwig. So kann ich es jederzeit betrachten. – Die Ausstellung in Zadar zeigte zwar nicht solche Highlights, dafür jedoch einen spannende Eindruck in frühe Werke des Künstlers. So war diese Ausstellung mein heutiges Zadar Highlight.
